This recital is the first chance I’ve gotten to have full creative power over my choices of repertoire, so the program is an eclectic mix of pieces that I love and connect with in an exciting way. We will start and end the journey with Handel, but in between, anything goes! I will be singing a set of American art songs based on the poetry of female American poets, Maurice Ravel’s setting of a Jewish text, and I will cross over fully into musical theater to perform my program for the finals of the Lotte Lenya Competition, which is my next stop after North Carolina. (This set includes works by Kurt Weill, Harnick/Bock, and Jason Robert Brown.) I hope for this recital to be a journey that we embark on together, a journey through the vast array of challenges and joys of the human condition—a journey that is best described by music itself.
